How to Use Oversized Cushions & Modular Floor Sofas

How to Use Oversized Cushions & Modular Floor Sofas

One cushion, three jobs: a backrest for reading in bed, a soft alternative to a headboard, and a modular seat for the floor or a window seat. This guide covers the size that fits your mattress, how to arrange one or two cushions, and how to look after them.

Find your size

Every size is built around a standard mattress width. Measure across the mattress itself — not the frame — then choose the cushion that sits just inside each edge.

  1. Measure the mattress. Standard widths are 38" twin, 54" full, 60" queen, 76" king and 72" California king.
  2. Match the cushion. Our widths are matched to standard mattresses, so the cushion sits within the mattress edges instead of overhanging them.
  3. Choose a quantity. One cushion gives a continuous run across the bed; two give each sleeper their own backrest on a king or California king.

All measurements in inches.

Bed size (mattress width) Cushion size (W × H × D) Qty Best for
Twin (38") 39" × 20" × 8" 1 Dorms, teen rooms, guest nooks
Full / Double (54") 54" × 20" × 8" 1 Small apartments, solo sleepers, light two-person use
Queen (60") 59" × 20" × 8" 1 Standard master bedrooms; the all-rounder size
King (76") 76" × 20" × 8" 1 or 2 Shared beds: one continuous run, or two separate backrests
California King (72") 71" × 20" × 8" 1 or 2 Long-frame beds; same one-or-two logic as King

Twin note: the 39" cushion fits a standard twin. If you want the oversized, layered look on a main bed, start at Full. If your bed frame is wider than the mattress, measure the frame instead.

Three ways to use it

Reading in bed

Prop the cushion against the wall or headboard and lean back. It turns the head of the bed into a comfortable place to read, work or watch something — no pile of pillows to rearrange.

Floor seating

One module against a wall makes a floor chair; two side by side make a low sofa. Use them on a rug in the living room, den or a bedroom corner, and add a throw to change the look.

Window seat

Turn a hard bench into a seat with a back. Measure the inside width, choose the closest cushion, and set it against the window wall.

One cushion or two?

  • One wide cushion: a single unbroken run across the bed — the classic layered look, and the simplest to straighten in the morning.
  • Two narrower cushions: each sleeper gets their own backrest, and you can move one aside when the other person is still sitting up.

Window seats, benches and nooks

Bay windows, built-in benches and empty corners are usually hard, flat and uncomfortable to lean on. A cushion solves the back support; a floor module solves the seat.

  • Shallow bench: one cushion against the window wall, sized to the inside width of the bench.
  • Deep bay window: cushion at the back for support, floor module at the front edge to make a chaise.
  • Corner nook: one cushion in the corner and a second on the perpendicular wall for a two-sided seat.

Care and keeping

  • Weekly: vacuum the surface with an upholstery attachment to lift dust and pet hair.
  • Spills: blot with a clean cloth instead of rubbing, then air-dry away from direct heat.
  • Sunlight: keep the cushion out of long stretches of direct sun to slow fading.
  • Reshape: rotate and reshape it every few weeks so it keeps its loft and wears evenly.
  • Before washing: check the care label sewn into the cover.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a cushion instead of a headboard?

Yes. It sits at the head of the bed and gives you something soft to lean against, with a layered look that stands in for upholstery. It suits rental bedrooms and beds set under a window, where a fixed headboard isn't an option.

Will it fit a twin bed?

Yes — the 39" width is sized for a standard twin. We list twin for dorms, teen rooms and guest nooks. For the oversized, layered look on a main bed, Full and up give more presence.

Should I buy one cushion or two for a king bed?

Either works. One 76" cushion gives a continuous run across the bed. Two cushions that add up to your mattress width give each sleeper their own backrest and are easier to move.

How do I keep it from sliding?

In most setups no straps are needed: the cushion leans against the wall or headboard and stays in place under body weight. If your frame is glossy or the cushion creeps, a non-slip rug pad underneath adds grip.

Will it work on a window seat or bench?

Yes. Measure the inside width of the bench and choose the closest size. On a deep bay window, a floor module in front of the bench makes a chaise.

How do I clean it?

Vacuum weekly with an upholstery attachment, blot spills rather than rubbing, and air-dry away from direct heat. Check the care label before washing any cover.

I'm between two sizes. Which should I choose?

Size down rather than up — a cushion that sits inside the mattress edge looks intentional, while an overhanging one fights the bedding. If you're still unsure, send us your mattress width through our contact form and we'll confirm.

Not sure which size to choose?

Tell us your mattress width, the room the cushion is going in, and how you plan to use it. We'll come back with a size and a setup that fits.
